De Cryptocurrencie begon in het jaar 2009 met de introductie van de Bitcoin door Satoshi Nakamoto, wat een pseudoniem is van een onbekend persoon of een groep mensen die de bitcoin ontwierp en zo de eerste blockchain oprichtte.

Hoewel Bitcoin nog steeds verreweg de grootste cryptocurrency is op basis van marktaandeel en het aantal gebruikers, zijn er tegenwoordig duizenden andere cryptocurrencies waar je in kunt investeren.
Als je goed kijkt lijkt het allemaal wel op Bitcoin en zijn het digitale valuta waar geen enkele entiteit de volledige macht over heeft.
In tegenstelling tot de bijvooebeeld de Euro weet je van de Bitcoin zeker dat er nooit meer dan 21 miljoen in omloop komen. Deze regels worden bewaakt door moderne cryptografie, hele krachtige grote getallen waar geen enkele computer ter wereld tegen is opgewassen.
